Part of marrying Newt was understanding that his creatures would always hold importance in his life. Perhaps she was the most important thing to him but his creatures were very close. She didn’t mind that, she loved that her husband was passionate about what he did. She was so proud when people asked if her husband was the Newt Scamander because she could tell them that yes, yes he was. People told her constantly how they wished they could live a life like Newt’s, which she was sure he didn’t imagine would ever be said.
How would that work with a child? How would Tina continue her work? She did an important job and she could hardly go on missions to hunt down dark wizard pregnant or with a newborn. She’d had time to think these thoughts already, she’d had the entire journey home. She’d apparated a mile or so down the road and walked the rest of the way. All the while thinking how she was going to tell Newt about this additional variable they’d introduced into their lives.
Tina allowed him time to react, like she’d allowed herself. It couldn’t be expected that he would know exactly what to say straight away or that he’d even know what to think of it all. She smiled reassuringly and kept her face non-judgemental, neutral. Newt was at liberty to think whatever he wanted about this situation, she wouldn’t deny him that.
She let out a soft exhale when he squeezed her hand and assured her that he wasn’t upset or angry. Tina had never expected him to be either of those things, one of the reasons she’d married him was his heart the size of an ocean. “I’m not, you take all the time you need.” She assured him softly. In the years since she’d moved to England, her New York accent had softened slightly. Theseus joked that she would have a fully British accent by the end of the decade. “It is unexpected.” She agreed.
A soft laugh escaped her lips when he commented about the savings that they’d been hoarding away like they were nifflers themselves. Neither of them were particularly attached to material things, perfectly happy with their cosy cottage and spending most of their outgoings on the upkeep of Newt’s creatures. “We don’t have to worry about anything just yet.” She assured him, taking his other hand so she was holding them both. “There’s no rush, we have time.”
Times like this Newt couldn’t help but be glad that Tina was as understanding as he was. There’d be many who’d be upset by anything but a positive reaction, but Tina withheld and allowed him to process. He was a smart man, brighter in more life-or-death situations than anyone would like to admit, but sometimes– Sometimes it was simply difficult. Difficult to focus on everything going on or difficult to simply suss together his particular thoughts on a matter. He may have been well-aware of who he was and his own thoughts, but expressing them— Expressing them in an appropriate, humanlike manner is where he failed.
His tongue darted out to moisten the corner of his lip when he hears her exhale. Hazel eyes turning to glance up at her, shoulders squared, as they flicker over her expression. Carefully noting the lines around her mouth and the way her nose isn’t scrunched up like it often was when she was concentrating. It seemed she was doing her very best to appear as relaxed as possible given the circumstances, funny, he thinks given she’s the one with child. He bites down on the corner of her lip, eyes settling on her shoulder when he gives a slight nod.
it is unexpected. They’d talked about a lot of things in the years they’d been together. A child had, at best, always seemed a far off thing– with their work and the war (and both of their efforts in the war). Both had been content with this life they had that it never seemed… Necessary, he supposed for lack of a more prudent word. Wizards and witches lived longer than their muggle counterparts so there was no clock ticking to its to its end either.
He blinks when she takes his other hand, peering up at her from beneath his fringe. There’s a quiet sort of wonder in his eyes, the same look he often gives a creature that amazes him (a look that was now often shared with Tina). Newt quirks half a smile, shking his head. “Did you know the gestation period of an African Elephant is 90 weeks? Non-mammals have longer and varying times– years it takes– but magical or non-magical the elephant has the longest I’ve seen yet. The mothers of non-mammals carry them and care for them the entire duration and each creature I’ve passed spends those days hoarding, nesting, gathering for a child” Newt starts off-handedly, coloring slightly, “preparation for a birth is an incredibly strenuous activity regardless of species, I mean to say. And– I’ve helped in that particular process more than enough times to know time has a habit of going a lot quicker than imagined.”
Teeth catch on the inside of his lip as he glances up once more, considering what to say as he cants his head just to the side. Attention turning to the occamies near them. “I’ll have to leave you then, just for a little while. These little ones are ready to be returned to the wild and there’s some of the larger ones who can return, too, but I’ve been holding off since Dumbledore–” He stops short, coloring slightly. It’s no secret Dumbledore still has him under his thumb and he aids in the efforts, his trips these days often being under direct or indirect advisement of the man. But there’s something more he should be doing, saying, and while he’s used to creature pregnancy this is different–
Newt exhales, scrunching his shoulders up before turning his attention properly to her– Eyes searching for her as he tries to find the words he delicately wants to say. “But… How do you feel about all of this, Tina?” Newt’s voice is soft, quieter even than usual, “I’ll stick by you, whatever you feel. I know work has been quite stressing and it will certainly only get worse from here.” Not unkindly. Their world is in a dark state, Tina in the thick of it– He himself too often helping in a non-Ministry affiliated stake– Tina had been working hard to make things right he’d never deny her of it.
